Provenance Note: The Cowichan tradition, originating with the Indigenous knitters of Vancouver Island, became widely influential on hand-knitted knitwear throughout the 1970s, and this jumper draws clearly on that visual language. The shawl collar and heavy marl yarn are both characteristic of the style, and the central band of stylised motifs is well-executed, with the abstract forms sitting confidently across the width of the chest. The oatmeal marl is a particularly good base for this type of patterning, giving the piece a naturalistic, undyed quality that suits the folk tradition it draws from. A substantial, well-constructed jumper.
