Description:

Item: 1970s short sleeve dress by TGL of Sweden in a Vincel and cotton blend, deadstock condition. Green and white checkerboard ground with large-scale concentric medallion motifs scattered across the fabric, each one rendered in layered rings of red, yellow, blue, dark green and black. Shirt collar, full button placket with silver-tone buttons, chest pocket, and two large patch pockets at the hip. Short puffed sleeves. A vivid, full-colour print with a lot going on and carrying it all comfortably.

Provenance Note: TGL's checkerboard series from this period shows a label working with real confidence in print design. The checkerboard ground is bold enough to register on its own, but here it serves as the foundation for something more ambitious: the medallion motifs, each built up from multiple concentric rings in contrasting colours, have the quality of a target or a rosette, and the multicolour rendering means no two read quite the same at a glance. The combination of geometric ground and circular motif was a well-trodden path in early 1970s textile design, but this is a particularly full-colour, full-commitment example of it. In deadstock condition throughout.
