Description:

Item: 1950s short sleeve day dress by Printemps of Paris in cotton. White ground with an all-over scattered print of round-headed blooms — dahlias or chrysanthemums — in red and orange with soft taupe foliage. Round neckline with a short button placket, gently fitted waist, and a flared skirt with two large patch pockets sitting at the hip. Matching self-fabric buttons throughout. A light, well-proportioned dress with a distinctly French everyday elegance.

Condition: Very good vintage condition, with light wear consistent with age and use.

Provenance Note: Printemps is one of Paris's great department stores, with a history stretching back to 1865, and its own-label garments from the mid-twentieth century represent the better end of French ready-to-wear — well-cut, properly finished, and made for a clientele with an eye for quality. The print here is handled with restraint: the flowers loosely scattered rather than densely packed, the taupe foliage softening what might otherwise be a stark red and white contrast into something altogether more considered. The patch pockets are generous and well-placed, the button placket and matching buttons a careful finishing touch. A genuinely Parisian piece with provenance to match.
