Item: 1970s short sleeve knit top in a wool blend. Red and cream marl throughout, with horizontal cream tuck-stitch stripes running at regular intervals across the body and sleeves. Small V-notch neckline, short sleeves with ribbed cuffs, and a straight, relaxed cut. A warm, textured top with a cheerful, unfussy character.

Provenance Note: The combination of a marl ground with a tuck-stitch stripe is a well-used device in knitwear that gives the fabric two levels of texture: the salt-and-pepper quality of the marl itself, and the raised horizontal lines of the stripe running across it. In red and cream the effect is warm and direct. The short sleeve cut makes this a versatile layering piece as much as a standalone top, practical across seasons in the way that much of the best 1970s knitwear was designed to be.
