Description:

Item: 1970s V-neck sweater in Shetland wool, made in Scotland. Deep red throughout with a slight marl to the yarn, giving the colour a natural depth and variation. Labelled Shetland Slimfit. V-neckline, ribbed cuffs and hem, and a close, fitted cut through the body and sleeves. A warm, well-made sweater with the characteristic softness and texture of true Shetland wool.

Provenance Note: Shetland wool has been spun and knitted in Scotland for centuries, the fibre coming from the native Shetland sheep and carrying a natural elasticity and warmth that is distinctly its own. The slim fit cut here is a considered choice for the yarn: the Shetland knitting sits close to the body without pulling, the natural give in the fibre allowing the fitted silhouette without discomfort. The deep red with its subtle marl is a rich, confident colour that the Shetland yarn takes particularly well. Made in Scotland at a time when the domestic knitwear industry was producing some of its finest work.
