Provenance Note: Good tartan skirts from the 1970s always earn their keep because they bring so much colour and shape with very little effort. This one has the right balance of brightness and structure, with the pleated cut keeping it lively and easy to wear rather than stiff. It has that slightly collegiate, slightly folk-revival feel that ran through a lot of 1970s womenswear, and it is exactly the kind of piece that works just as well dressed simply as it does styled more fully.
