Description:

Item: Vintage NFL football jersey in deep burgundy cotton, featuring cracked gold “9” numerals and the name “JURGENSEN” applied across the upper back. Finished with classic gold-and-white striped sleeves and an early NFL shield patch to the shoulder. Long-bodied, broad-shouldered cut typical of professional-issue jerseys from the late 1960s into the 1970s, produced prior to the widespread adoption of mesh synthetics.

Condition: Well-worn vintage condition with softening to the cotton and even surface wear throughout. The name and numerals show pronounced cracking and abrasion from repeated laundering and use, consistent with genuine period wear. Fabric remains structurally sound with no major damage; wear is authentic and visually striking.

Provenance Note: This jersey represents the working reality of the NFL’s pre-modern era, when cotton kits were worn hard, washed relentlessly, and replaced without sentiment. Sonny Jurgensen was a defining figure in Washington football history, and jerseys bearing his name were never produced with longevity in mind. The cracked graphics, softened handle, and retained colour are the direct result of use rather than preservation. Surviving examples like this are increasingly scarce, not because they were rare to begin with, but because almost none were expected to last.
